Investigate a family therapy model Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Investigate a family therapy model - Essay Example a Satir that improvement remains a possibility always, and as such the model helps to improve the lives of individuals in a family unit by causing a transformation in the manner in which they view themselves and express themselves. The Satir Change Process Model lays the framework for assisting transformational change in individuals, couples, and families through changes in their basic beliefs or their self-understanding. This change roadmap provides the route through which individuals can be assisted in making choices that lead to increased self-esteem, provide self-accountability, and thereby enable the individual to move towards a more congruent understanding of self. There is a universal yearning in all individuals to be loved, acknowledged and accepted. The transformations that occur within the self of the individual provide the means to meeting these universal yearnings to be loved, acknowledged, and accepted. Transformation is a natural element of human process. Changes occur as a result of learning and growth. Changes happen based on decisions made. Changes are required as to cope with situations and the development of relations. This also causes in an individual the desire for changes in others in keeping with self-expectations, and this can lead to disappointment, when the desired changes do not happen. Thus in adapting to changing circumstances, an individual at times can develop emotions of helplessness, lack of power, fear, hurt, and anger, which lead to strained relationships. This can be avoided for the process of change can be empowering to the individual by self-development within the individual. This calls for removal of focus on behavior. It requires the individual to take charge of and transform the emotions, perceptions and expectations of the individual. From where does the individual draw the guidance and inspiration for such action? It comes from tapping the universal yearnings to be loved, acknowledged and accepted. It is the Universal

All About Vertical Motion Essay Example for Free

All About Vertical Motion Essay Hey! I know the vertical motion model can be hard, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a piece of cake. Math is all about using your prior knowledge, plugging it into what you know, to solve for what you don’t know. The vertical motion model is made up of the velocity, and height. The equation is -16t2 + vt + h. V is equivalent to the velocity, and h is equal to the height. The vertical motion falls under the influence of gravity. As the force due to gravity may be opposite to the direction of motion, there exists the possibility that the body under force of gravity reverses its direction. It is, therefore, important to understand that the quantities involved in the equations of motion may evaluate to positive or negative values with the exception of time (t). We must appropriately assign sign to various inputs that goes into the equation and correctly interpret the result with reference to the assumed positive direction. Further, some of them evaluate to two values one for one direction and another of reversed direction. The problem I created was based on Hope Solo and her soccer skills. Hope kicks the ball back at an initial height of 3 feet, and a vertical velocity at 20 feet per second. The equation to this problem would be h(t)= -16t2 + 20t + 3. This shows how 20 would be the velocity, and 3 would be the initial height. The problem would ask us for the equation, time the ball would hit the ground in seconds, time the ball was in the air at 5ft, and the maximum height of the ball. In order to find at what time the ball would hit the floor, we need to find zero in the calculator. First step into solving this problem is plugging in the equation into the calculator. You will the need to find zero under the x-axis, in trace zero. The calculator will ask you for left and right bound. The ball would then hit the ground at 1.4 seconds. Next, the problem asked for the time the ball hit 5 ft. The steps to make in the calculator is trace, value, and x=5 ft. The calculator would then find the time in seconds when the ball was 5 feet in the air. The ball was at 1.14 seconds when the ball hit 5 feet in the air. The problem also asked for maximum height. In order to find maximum height, you must go to trace, maximum, and the calculator would then ask you for left and right bound. If instructions are don’t correctly, the maximum height would be 9.25 feet. DeVon hits a baseball into the air with an initial vertical velocity of 60 feet per second and an initial height of 3 feet. Will Devon’s baseball clear a 60-foot brick wall 2 seconds after the ball was hit? In order to solve this problem, we must find the height the ball reaches at 2 seconds in the air. In order to do that, we must hit trace, value, and enter x=2. It then came to show that the ball reached 59 feet in 2 seconds. This proved that the ball will not pass 60 feet at 2 seconds. This makes sense because I know that the maximum height the ball reaches is 59.2 feet. 59.2 feet is lower than 60 feet. Therefore, the ball reaching 59 feet at 2 seconds does make sense. The ball was to go over the brick fence at 60 feet, but its highest peak is at 59.2. So, at no point in time will the ball reach over the 60 foot fence. In conclusion, Math is all about using your prior knowledge, plugging it into what you know, to solve for what you don’t know. The vertical motion model is real life sci ence and math. it works for any object that is effected by gravity. Michelle Villanueva G.R.A.S.P Goal; height at 2 seconds in the air Required; h(t)= -16t2 + 60t + 3 Analyze; value; 2 seconds X min; -10 Y-min; -50 X-max; 10 Y-max; 90 scl; 1 scl; 10 Solve; The ball will not reach 60 ft. at 2 seconds. It will reach 59 ft. at 2 seconds. Paraphrase; The ball will not reach 60 ft. at 2 seconds because the maximum height is 59.2. Therefore, if the ball’s highest point is 59.2, it can never reach 60 ft.

The Importance Of Team Work Management Essay

The Importance Of Team Work Management Essay The essay begins with an attempt to define the nature of teams and groups and considers the differences between the two. This is followed by a discussion of why teamwork is important to contemporary organisations. After which, the conditions necessary for effective team working is discussed drawing on Tuckman (1965) model of group development. Then a discussion of group processes that lead to ineffective teamwork are considered. Finally, the impact of technology is considered on the effect of teams and the rise of virtual teams before a conclusion is made. Defining Groups and Teams A definition of a team may assume that the team has, or is working towards a common goal (Pynadeth and Tambe, 2002). A team can be defined as groups of people embedded in organisations, performing tasks that contribute to achieving the organisations goals. They share overall work objectives. They have the necessary authority, autonomy and resources to achieve these objectives (West, 2004, p.18). The difference between a group and a team is that members of a team share a common goal they are pursuing collaboratively. Moreover, they can only succeed or fail as a whole, and the members of that team share the benefits and costs of success or failure. In contrast, the members of a (psychological) group may share a number of common features.but each has his or her own individual goals (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007, p.379). Importance of Teamwork In a contemporary organisations, what were once competitors are now collaborators, what were once outsiders are now stakeholders, what were once stark boundaries are now fuzzy fences. Organisations have now discovered the value of collaboration, both inside and outside (Brooks, 2006, p.115). Teamwork has been linked to economic advantages, higher output, lower absenteeism and increased employee satisfaction (Steijn, 2001; Brooks, 2006; Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). It has also been shown to lead to less stressful work, reduced alienation and improved working relationships (Katzenback and Smith). Effective Team Working Certain conditions are necessary for effective teamwork (Buchanan and Hyczsynski, 2007). Several models of team working have been developed, however Tuckmans Model of Group Development (1965) is one of the most widely used (Murray et al., 2006, Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). Tuckman (1965) model depicts four stages of group development, which represents a logical sequence of stages of group development of which every team must go through in order to work as a cohesive and effective team (Tuckman, 1965; Murray et al., 2006). The first stage is forming. Forming is about orientation, socialisation and developing relationships. Discovering what is acceptable behaviour, focusing on objectives. Discovering the nature and boundaries of the task, developing team behaviours The second stage is storming this is about confrontation and conflict and the struggle for power and influence. At this stage the group structure shifts towards hostility and conflict, as members express their individuality and resistance (Murray et al., 2006, p.314). During this stage there is conflict over individuals desires to express their own opinions, which often results in the polarisation of opinions (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). The third stage is norming, in this stage groups develop a cohesive approach, whereby harmonious relations replace conflict and disagreement. During this stage, communication becomes more open and people are more comfortable with expressing their opinions, even if it is different to others without fear of repercussions or thoughts of deviant behaviour (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). Members begin to develop social interactions that enhance the overall performance of the group (Murray et al., 2006). Performing is the final stage of group development, in which teams are finally able to work as a cohesive unit. This is about team collaboration and the focus is on getting the task at hand completed and reaching the shared goals of the team. By this stage, the team should have a thorough understanding of what is required of them, the problems, challenges and issues they face in reaching their goals and will have established norms of behaviour that will facilitate the team in meeting its goals (Tuckman, 1965; Murray et al., 2006). The team which emerges as a result of these group development stages is a mature group, capable and willing to complete the tasks as defined by the organisation (Tuckman, 1965; Murray et al., 2006, Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). Arguably, if the team is not able, for whatever reason to complete the stages of group development, then the team will be ineffective (Murray et al., 2006). As a result, this has important implications for managers and team leaders. Group processes and behaviour cannot be separated from the pursuit of effective team working. Therefore, leaders and managers must develop and emotional awareness of the influence of the psychological group on the overall performance of the team (Steijn, 2001; Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007) Factors which Threaten the Success of the Team Buchanan and Hyczynski (2007) point out that teamwork of all kinds is fraught with tensions, conflicts, obstacles and problems. If these are not managed effectively, rather than surpassing the best members capabilities, the total group output may actually equal less than the weakest members efforts (p.351). This is known as negative synergy. This can be caused by factors such as negative equity, whereby other members of the group underperform so the other person thinks why should I?, shirking of responsibility, negative effort of group reward whereby everyone is rewarded the same regardless of effort and finally, problems of coordination, so people are obstructing others ability to get on with a task (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 20007). Collectively, this phenomenon has come to be known as social loafing (Ingham et al., 1974). In addition to social loafing, problems of group think can have a negative impact on the performance of teams. Whilst the development of group norms and behaviour can be beneficial to the team, in its extreme form this can lead to the problem of group think (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). Group think occurs whereby members of the group fail to critically analyse, test and evaluate problems, issues and challenges which face the group (Murray et al., 2006). This may be caused as a subconscious desire for members to avoid deviating from the prescribed norms of behaviour and group consensus (Buchanan and Hyczynski, 2007). However, this leads to ineffective team working, which is not beneficial to the organisation (West, 2004). Managers and team leaders play a pivotal role in ensuring that the problems of social loafing and group think does not occur. In addition managers should recognise team leaders who may advertently or inadvertently encourage the onset of negative synergy, social loafing and group think and take steps to minimise the impact of their ineffective team leadership. Impact of Technology on Team Functioning Technology plays an increasingly important role on the way in which teams function (Brooks, 2006). This is because organisations are becoming increasingly distributed across geographical boundaries and across industries (Brooks, 2006, p.115). There are many different types of technologies that have emerged which facilitate the development of teamwork both in a virtual and non-virtual teamwork environment. The rise in computer mediated technology, which facilitates communication, planning and organisation, has broken down barriers and can contribute towards making the team more effective (West, 2004; Brooks, 2006). Virtual teams are becoming an increasingly common extension of traditional organisational structures. Brooks (2006) describes the process as the following: virtual organisations, workplaces and teams are becoming increasingly common place. In a virtual team the members primary interaction is through some combination of electronic communications systems, which allows members of the team to cross time, space and cultural boundaries (Brooks, 2006, p.110). The type of technology which facilitates both physical and virtual teams includes the reduction in costs in recent years of portable PCs and consumer electronics and of communications devices. For example, laptops have seen a reduction in price and the majority of modern laptops come with in-built microphones, speakers and web cams for video conferencing. The cost of international calls has reduced and can even be made for free using VOIP (voice over internet protocol) technologies, such as Skype and Google Voice. Conclusion Teamwork is becoming increasingly important in contemporary organisations, and as long as teams are formed, managed and implemented effectively, can provide a source of competitive advantage in terms of increased employee satisfaction, creativity and innovation. However, if teams are assigned to inappropriate tasks, are managed ineffectively or not provided with adequate support, resources and autonomy to carry out their tasks then the effect of teamwork can be counterproductive. Teams are formal groups assigned by management that have shared goals. There is a difference between teams and groups; groups can exist without teams but teams cannot exist without groups. Therefore, the impact of group behaviour and group dynamics will have a significant impact on the overall performance of the team. Therefore, management must be awareness of the presence of groups that create their own norms and personal goals, which may deviate from the objectives of the team. Therefore, teamwork can be i s a complex management area, yet if carried out effectively, the results can be very rewarding.

Hamlet Essay -- essays research papers

Is Hamlet Mad? "I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw" (II.ii.369-370). This is a classic example of the "wild and whirling words" (I.v.134) with which Hamlet hopes will persuade people to believe that he is mad. These words, however, prove that beneath his "antic disposition," (I.V.172). Hamlet is sane. Under his strange choice of imagery involving points of the compass, the weather, and hunting birds, he is announcing that he is calculatedly choosing the times when to appear mad. Hamlet is saying that he knows a hunting hawk from a hunted "handsaw" or heron, in other words, that, very far form being mad, he is perfectly capable of recognizing his enemies. Hamlet's madness was faked for a purpose. He warned his friends he intended to fake madness, but Gertrude as well as Claudius saw through it, and even the slightly dull-witted Polonius was suspicious. His public face is one of insanity but, in his private moments of soliloquy, through his confidences to Horatio, and in his careful plans of action, we see that his madness is assumed. After the Ghost's first appearance to Hamlet, Hamlet decides that when he finds it suitable or to his advantage, he will put on a mask of madness so to speak. He confides to Horatio that when he finds the occasion appropriate, he will "put an antic disposition on" (I.v.172). This strategy gives Hamlet a chance to find proof of Claudius's guilt and to contemplate his revenge tactic. Although he has sworn to avenge his father's murder, he is not sure of the Ghost's origins: "The spirit that I have seen / May be the devil" (II.ii.584-585). He uses his apparent madness as a delaying tactic to buy time in which to discover whether the Ghost's tale of murder is true and to decide how to handle the situation. At the same time, he wants to appear unthreatening and harmless so that people will divulge information to him, much in the same way that an adult will talk about an important secret in the presence of a young child. To convince everyone of his madness, Hamlet spends many hours walking back and forth alone in the lobby, speaking those "wild and whirling words" (I.V. 134) which make little sense on the surface but in fact carry a meaningful subtext. &... ...n addition, the letter Horatio from him through the ambassador bound for England is clear and precise and shows no signs of a confused mind. Finally, I am convinced of Hamlet's sanity by his very normal reactions to the people around him. He is perfectly sane, friendly and courteous with the players, giving them good acting tips which they appreciate and respect. When Polonius and Claudius test the theory of rejected love by "loosing" Ophelia to him, Hamlet acts completely rationally. He greets Ophelia sweetly, gets a little cold when he remembers that he has not seen her "for this many a day," is very hurt when she returns his remembrances, and becomes completely furious, insulting womankind in general, when she lies to him about her father's whereabouts and he realizes he is being spied on. He reacts the way any hurt young rejected lover would. In the end, it is surprising that he is able to keep up the charade of faking madness for so long, and part of his tragedy is that it doesn't help him anyway; in the end, he avenges his father by killing Claudius not through an act of madness, but as a result of Claudius's own treachery.

How the Internet may impact your career Essay

The evolutions and advances in technology have indeed expanded the frontiers of man. Every facet of man’s life has been changed by the new technological innovations that have been introduced. Life has become so much easier yet at the same time it seems however that life has also been turned into something more complicated. It cannot be denied, however, that the future of humanity lies in being able to embrace and adapt to technology. Technology has done a lot for human beings. Without the development in technology it is possible that the pyramids would never have been built and neither would we be able to communicate with each other from remote places all over the world. Given all of these effects of the internet, it comes as no surprise that fortunes and dreams can be made or undone on the internet. As a young individual who has so much planned in life, I feel that the internet presents a unique challenge and a myriad of opportunities. In the field of business, there have been various innovations that have been introduced with applications to the field of business. One of them is website development that is custom made to the test ad requirements of a certain company. Office animation tools like computers, telephones and fax machines are another set of technologically introduced changes that are very vital in today’s world. As such, the website as a platform that has aided business development into embracing the global markets is something that must not be overlooked. This is an enterprise arm of technology that has a lot of potential. As such this allows companies to advertise their products and also buy things through online links. This internet technology has really opened up the global market so that people can today transact business even without ever getting into physical contact with others. It is this feature of enterprise technology that I find myself intrigued with. As a marketing expert, I find enterprise technology to be very helpful in communication. I know that I will use the internet to carry out advertisement campaigns to various destinations. The internet is also very handy in getting the best ground to market goods and also to find very good suppliers of raw materials. The immense network that is available online can be a headache to those who are not well familiar with it but it can also be a gold mine of opportunities for people such as me who see the future of marketing and supply chain management hinged upon that internet backbone. It is hard to imagine life without email nowadays. The only efficient means of communication, with efficient meaning that the message is delivered within seconds, is either through the cellular phone or through email via the internet. It is even more impossible to imagine how people could work under circumstances that denied them access to the latest communication technologies or even technology at all. As the developments in the electronics and communications technology continues to improve and advance, it will no longer be far off to imagine a world where nobody is walking the streets and everyone is hooked up to their computers interacting with each other in a world where they can be their own gods and dictate their own destinies without even breaking a sweat. Instead of just seeing an image of another person online, it may actually be possible to experience the sensation of feeling and touching that person. Perhaps one of the most influential business innovations over the past years has been the growth of e-commerce transactions. The reason for this is that it has allowed several online business companies to take their businesses to another level. Where the internet was defined by being able to create money through hype and investing on the next big development, the growth of e-commerce transactions has removed all speculation and allowed the market forces to supply and transact in real time involving billions of dollars. One will be hard pressed to find companies that have not taken to the internet to expand their markets and even perhaps smooth out their logistics. It is not only the market access but the ease by which functions of business can be carried out online that makes this such an interesting development. A company that has a website can carry out all the business transactions over the internet. Various activities done over the website include advertising the products of the company, illustrating the various prices that are applicable for each of the items and also illustrating channels of delivery. Companies can develop a communication avenue over the internet so that they can collect views of people and also respond to any questions as they arise. Websites can also be used to advertise vacancies for employment especially when the company is in need of recruiting more people for empty positions. Enterprise technology has also provided an avenue through which companies can make more money to add to the revenue that is received in the company. As such, the growth of e-commerce online has made all of this possible. E-commerce provides a quicker and easier alternative. The enormous variety of items made available online makes cyberspace the largest mall in the entire world. A single search query on any internet browser will yield hundreds if not thousands of results. Combine that with the relative ease by which a person can also research on the pros and cons of items and a wise shopper is created. The variety on ebay, the largest online auction store in the world, is enough to fill the entire state of Texas. All the choices that are available online and the price advantage that is offered and the convenience all make the internet the shopping haven for any shopper. It is clear from this brief discussion that I see my career as being positively impacted by the internet. The boundless possibilities for anyone with the training but more importantly the perseverance that are available on the internet are sure to allow me to fulfill my dreams. I guess in the short term I will need to bide my time and learn more about this industry but in the long run I see myself becoming an innovator in this field. The business aspects such as e-commerce and trade online are but one facet of this internet. There are so many others there for other people. This is why I am confident that the internet will be able to help not only myself but those who are bold enough with their careers.
